On Sunday, April 17th, Janine Summy's 5th Annual Triple Challenge went off without a hitch and with more people completing all three events than ever before.

In the tradition of Bellingham, Washington's Ski-to-Sea event and Bend, Oregon's Pole Pedal Paddle, Janine Summy has been celebrating her birthday and the changing seasons with her friends in a non-competitive multi-sport event that has become quite the happening.

April 4-8 is Spring Break for Curlew and Republic Schools. Students, with a well-deserved vacation from the daily academic and extracurricular responsibilities of school, are free to sleep in, hang out and play video games. Or … they can get out of the house, enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise to boot. As the weather warms and the ground dries out in the low country and snow continues to fall in the mountains, it is a perfect time for the kids to get outside. And for those looking for less-structured outdoor fun, Spring Break will be the time to pull the bicycles out of storage, hit the local hiking trail or head up to the passes for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
Opportunities abound for parents to involve their children in outdoor recreation at this time of the year. For young archaeologists, the Stonerose Fossil Site will start its season on April 2. Young people looking for an excellent equestrian experience might consider private riding instruction and trail rides offered by WildWind Farm. A little further afield, 49 Degrees North offers its annual free ski week, April 4-10.

Ferry County’s own Boy Scout Troop 61 has once again taken home the coveted Polar Bear Cup! This award recognizes the top performing troop at the annual Polar Bear Campout at Summit Lake Camp, which took place this year on February 4-6. The event, sponsored by the Okanogan District of the Grand Columbia Council of the Boy Scouts of America, is a two-night winter campout for Boy Scout troops from Ferry and Okanogan Counties. Since the 1970s, scouts have been braving the elements, sleeping in tents and snow shelters and having a fabulous time doing it.

What a day it was in Curlew! On Saturday, January 15, over 70 people came out to celebrate the inaugural Ferry County Rail Trail Ski Day. This was the very first organized public event on the Rail Trail and will certainly not be the last. Folks aged 2 to 80 tried out skiing or snowshoeing along a picturesque stretch of the Kettle River just north of the village of Curlew. Some were old hands at self-propelled snow sports; others were out for their first time. Smiles were contagious as the ski conditions were excellent and the weather was warm.

In 1913, a Ford dealer in New Hampshire converted a Model T, equipping it with a track and ski set-up to allow it to travel over snow. Virgil White named his invention a “snowmobile." Over the years, various improvements were made on this original design (including an air-driven version powered by a propeller) until 1954, when the first recreational snowmobile appeared. From that point on, snowmobiling as a recreational activity began to grow in popularity and by the 1960s, had become very common in snow belt communities in the US and Canada.
