Election coverage

Since neither the state nor county produce a voter's pamphlet that covers local races, the Ferry County View will be publishing a voter's guide and mailing it for free to all residents of Ferry County on October 13, the day the general election ballots are mailed by the Auditor's office. In last month's View, we invited readers to submit questions to be asked of the candidates, many of which the candidates will be answering in the voter's guide. The guide will also feature a brief description of the responsibilities and salary of each office, and if space permits we will publish election-related letters to the editor and general statements from candidates. We invite readers to submit all letters to the editor through our contact page on this website or drop them by our office at 771 S Keller St. in Republic. Letters that are not published will appear on our website.

Your business

We hope you enjoy reading the "Your Business" column each month in the View. Writer Sikander Jaad began the column with a series of instructional articles about business plans, marketing, customer service and other topics of concern to business professionals. She then embarked on a series of business profiles, interviewing local businesspeople to get their takes on the challenges and joys of doing business in Ferry County. It's important to note that while the instructional series and the interview series fall under the same "Your Business" heading, Ms. Jaad intends in the profiles to simply tell the interviewee's story without comment or critique. She continues the interview series this month with an excellent sketch of Hamilton's Shoot-N-Irons co-owner Jack Hamilton.

I ran across a website this week that revived of one of my longstanding pet peeves: bankcard interchange fees.

Wait! Before your eyes glass over at the mention of an unglamorous topic you may never have even heard of, please hear me out. Interchange fees are amounts paid by merchants to credit card companies and their member banks when customers pay by debit or credit card. Whether you buy a candy bar at the gas station or a $1000 set of tires, if you pay by bankcard the merchant pays a percentage of that sale for the privilege of accepting payment by plastic.
