Now that it’s the lazy days of summer, it’s sorely tempting to relax the hunt for those college dollars. I’m even a victim of that feeling! This month’s column is a slightly different take on going about finding ways to pay for your post-secondary studies. I hope it helps!

Relying on your high school guidance counselor or a monthly newspaper column for your scholarship news is somewhat of a risky way to approach financing your college experience. To be really successful, you have to be a little bit more motivated than that.

Lots of things are different when you move from a big city to a small town. One of the things my husband and I noticed early on in Republic was donation cans. It was very touching to see such a show of community support. It was commonplace to want to help someone in a time of need. We were always happy to give what we could when we ran across these donation cans. Of course it was never a thought that we would someday be recipients.

There are special people who care about their community and are willing to give of themselves to see a project through to completion. These are the people who make things happen rather than sit back and watch things happen. Larry and Debbie Besemann are the kind of people that make things happen. Larry and Debbie have been volunteering in the Republic community and at the Republic School for the past 20 years. They could be found preparing and serving food for the annual community Thanksgiving dinners, working at the food bank, or donating their time and energy delivering Christmas baskets.

One of the most popular vocational training programs at Curlew Job Corps is welding.

The course is taught by Jake Miller, a total outdoorsman, who attracts students who are not only interested in working in the industry, but also like Jake’s friendly but no-nonsense approach to teaching.
